The Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV won’t arrive until 2024, while Ram’s EV might take even longer. The Rivian R1T excels as a midsize lifestyle machine and the Hummer EV is wildly over the top, but the Lightning is essentially a pure American half-ton hauler with a better, more efficient drivetrain. That notable exception is towing, which takes a big bite out of range, but if you want a traditional full-size pickup with electric power the Lightning is basically the only choice, it just happens to be a really good one. That efficiency is partially offset by the one major change for 2023: big price hikes, and possibly more increases to come. Relative to the EcoBoost V6 F-150 over five years, the Lightning will cost 40% less to maintain (according to Ford) and $9,000 less to fuel (according to the EPA). It’s faster, quieter, smoother, handles better and is far more efficient than the gas F-150 while being just as roomy and practical. With one notable exception, it does everything the regular F-150 does, only better. ![]() In time this novelty might wear off, but the F-150 Lightning is in demand for a reason. In a week of driving the 2023 Lightning, I couldn’t get out of the truck without somebody asking: “How far does it go on a charge? How hard is it to live with? How much does it cost? Can you tow with it?” If you buy a Lightning, be prepared to answer questions from everyone you meet. ![]() ![]() This is the first proper full-size electric pickup, and the public is still eager. Sold out even before full production began, the Ford F-150 Lightning was introduced just last year to a very eager reception.
